What is Emergency Dentistry?
The most common dental injuries are chipped, cracked, broken, or knocked out teeth. These injuries usually happen by a sports accident, a fall, trying to eat food that is too hard or any other type of accident. Sometimes depending on how bad the dental accident is or the location of the tooth, it is possible that a minor chipped or broken tooth can wait to be treated by your dentist during normal business hours. But if the crack is severe, has nerve damage, or is completely knocked out, you should seek immediate medical attention at your nearest emergency room.
How to repair a chipped, cracked, or broken tooth
Not all dental injuries are the same, which mean that they all cannot be treated and repaired the same way. The best way to assist each dental emergency is to have a face to face consultation with one of our general dentist or prosthodontist, in order to examine and discuss your options for repairing your chipped, broken, or knocked out tooth. The most common ways to repair the effected tooth are dental bonding or dental crowns.
Same Day Dentistry – Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions should only be performed when necessary! Some reasons for extractions would be due to a damaged tooth that can not be repaired, an infected tooth that can’t be healed, extra teeth that are causing overcrowding, or a wisdom tooth that is prone to infection.
How tooth extractions are performed
Tooth extractions are performed with a sedative to numb the pain, in some procedures your dentist may even recommend a sedative to put you asleep for a few minutes. Depending on the structure of the tooth, the extraction may be done by a general dentist if it above the surface of the gum. But if the tooth has not yet broken out of the gums or is impacted, your general dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon.
