What is Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting is a minor surgical procedure performed by a dental specialist to fix any issues between your teeth and jaw. Bone grafts for the jaw area often come from your own body, but may come from an animal’s bone or sterilized human donor’s bone. The dental specialist makes an incision in your gum to expose the bone area, and then attaches the bone grafting material to your bone to bond together.
Why would I need a Bone Graft?
Bone grafts are usually performed to accomplish the following treatments:
- Dental Implants – dental implants require strong tooth volume and density in order to successfully place the dental implant.
- Tooth Extractions – since tooth extractions leave the tooth socket empty, bone grafting material is deposited in case you replace the tooth with a dental implant.
- Save remaining teeth – periodontal disease can cause bone loss around the tooth making them loose and at risk of losing them. Bone grafting material is placed around the tooth to strengthen it, help regenerate bone growth, and keeps them in place.
